Don Norman.

Editor’s Note: Say hi to the new guy

You’ve likely seen Don Norman’s work in these pages several times in recent months and you can expect to see much more of it now, as he officially becomes an associate editor for Grainews starting with this issue. Most recently a reporter with our sister book, the Manitoba Co-operator, Don has a degree in international […] Read more

Editor’s Rant: Cinquante!

I can’t help it. I’ve watched enough French-language beer commercials that anytime I see the number 50 out in the wild, my first thought is to exclaim “Cinquante!” in an outside voice. My second thought is to not do that, because that would just make the birthday or anniversary party weird. With that earworm now […] Read more

Boyd Anderson gives a grandchild a ride on a favourite horse. He said each horse had its own personality and he could figure it out so the animals would be great transportation for ranch country. He did encounter one that refused to behave; it got sold to be used as a bucking horse in rodeos.

Boyd Anderson’s life was a history of Prairie farming

Grainews columnists I have known, part 2 of a series

Let me first repeat the introduction to these columns. Grainews was first published by United Grain Growers, which was owned by farmers. The first editor, John Clark, recruited several farmers/ranchers to write regular columns that told it as it was “down on the farm.” Farmers writing for farmers was the idea. Boyd Anderson was a […] Read more

Editor’s Rant: Yeah, write

In the weeks since I’ve been back at the Grainews desk I’ve had a few people inquire whether we’re looking for material. Answer: yes. Always were. Always are. You’ve probably noticed over the last few years we don’t lead with the phrase “Written by farmers, for farmers” anymore. That’s not to imply farmers somehow all […] Read more

It’s been a wonderful visit

For years we've shared our lives with Grainews readers and they've done the same with us

This will be my final Rancher’s Diary column. I was recently informed that with the current business changes at Grainews, my column will no longer be published, but I was graciously given the chance to say goodbye to my readers — many of whom have become personal friends over the years. I first became aware […] Read more

Editor’s Column: Winds of change

There is a lot happening at Grainews this fall. Change can feel uncomfortable, but it can also feel exhilarating. I am feeling both at the moment, but the balance is tipped toward the latter at the time of writing. There is exciting stuff happening at Grainews, new stuff. I imagine it’s a similar feeling to […] Read more
