With dry conditions in southwest Manitoba in 2021, Bill Nicholson harvested a crop that was about a half to two-thirds of a normal yield. He’s expecting it to be another dry growing season in 2022.

Growers tailor their farm plans for 2022

Farmer Panel: Most are gearing up for dry growing conditions with average yields

After a dry 2021 growing season in most, but not all, parts of Western Canada, farmer panel members for our Jan. 18, 2022, issue of Grainews say they aren’t planning any crazy moves for the coming growing season. However, they will be making some adjustments in fertilizer application rates and crop rotations for 2022, while […] Read more

In 2019, high levels of insensitivity of the anthracnose pathogen to Group 11 fungicides was confirmed in Saskatchewan lentil fields. Testing to confirm this insensitivity revealed a mutation (G143A) that enables the pathogen to have cross-resistance to all Group 11 fungicides.

Another tool to control anthracnose

New label registrations will help combat fungicide insensitivity

Thanks to an expanded label registration, western Canadian lentil growers will have a new tool from Bayer Crop Science for effective disease control in the 2022 crop year. As of mid-2021, the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) expanded the label of a well-established fungicide — Proline Gold — to include anthracnose control in lentils. At […] Read more

The positive environment around the Agri-Trade Equipment Expo in Red Deer didn’t look too threatening and for that I am grateful.

An attitude of gratitude

All the hardships in the world just remind me to be grateful for where I am, what I have

I’m so friggin’ positive some days I should have been a farmer. I haven’t done an extensive survey, but the few producers I have talked to in recent weeks on the phone or met at farm shows or producer meetings, are all positively gearing up for the 2022 growing season. Yes, there was disappointment and […] Read more

Ben Cavers scans one of the QR codes posted in the cab of a farm tractor. Whether it’s for Cavers, another member of the family farm or a hired worker, the code hosts a wide range of information including photos and short, homemade videos on how to operate a piece of equipment.

QR codes find a fit in daily farm operations

Those odd-looking, black markings can be the key to field details and equipment instructions

You’ve seen them lots. QR codes. Those odd-looking squares with black markings that are applied to a lot of packaging. And in recent months, you may even now have a QR code image on your cellphone to show the world proof of vaccination against the COVID-19 virus. But do those codes have a fit in […] Read more

More on QR codes

Most Canadian farmers are certainly familiar with QR codes these days — the QR stands for quick response. First, they’ve been around for nearly 30 years — it’s a square with a maze of black symbols and markings inside its border, often found on the labels of various products.  The QR code is described as […] Read more

To increase capacity and efficiency, Jake Leguee built a rack for the field spraying trailer that can hold up to four of the 800- to 1,000-litre plastic chemical totes. The rack (or shelf) sits against the front water tank on the left side of the photo. Two totes sit on the deck of the trailer, while the other two totes are secured to the shelf above. Leguee can draw chemical from more than one tote at a time if needed to fill the sprayer tank more quickly.

Save time with spray operation efficiencies

Covering more acres in a day doesn’t mean you need to drive faster

As most farmers today agree, the field sprayer is one of the most important and perhaps one of the most used pieces of farm machinery, so with a lot of butt-time in the sprayer seat there is time to ponder ways to get more acres done in a day. If you are racing against changing […] Read more

How to choose the right sprayer nozzle

Do some research, but also call a specialist for advice

Under the heading “Perhaps Too Much of a Good Thing,” sprayer expert Tom Wolf says probably the biggest challenge about selecting the right nozzles for the field sprayer is having too much choice. “Finding the right nozzle is a bit of a chore simply because there is an overabundance of supply,” says Wolf. “The fact […] Read more
