Palmer amaranth pops back up in Ontario

Weed infamous in U.S. for multiple herbicide resistances

A single plant that showed up this summer on the edge of a southwestern Ontario cornfield is cause for concern among Canadian farmers, weed specialists warn. Writing Monday in the ag ministry’s Field Crop News, Ontario provincial weed management specialist Mike Cowbrough said the plant in question, found in Wellington County, is confirmed as palmer […] Read more

At Ag in Motion: Herbicide resistance fight needs integrated seed management

'Those seedlings we don’t manage to kill (are) probably the most herbicide-resistant'

Harvest weed-seed control takes aim at reducing herbicide-resistant weeds that western Canadian farmers find more and more every year. At the Ag in Motion outdoor farm show this week, field residue management manufacturer Redekop won the Innovations Award for Environmental Sustainability for its harvest Seed Control Unit, which destroys more than 95 per cent of […] Read more

At Ag in Motion: Harvest weed control still in the mix

'You’re not going to spray your way out of this'

It’s a relatively new solution to the age-old problem of trying to get rid of weeds without broadcasting the seed or using increasingly less effective herbicides — mechanical separation and pulverization of weed seed. Harvest weed seed control might not be a golden bullet to tackle glyphosate-, fluroxypyr- and dicamba-resistant weeds, but according to Agriculture […] Read more

The importance of pre-seed herbicide application

The importance of pre-seed herbicide application

Q & A with an expert

Q: Should I skip the pre-seed herbicide application? A: As the long winter on the Prairies comes to an end, growers are starting to prepare for the 2023 growing season. With weather delays, many growers may be eager to get seeding and skip the pre-seed herbicide application. However, utilizing a pre-seed burnoff is a great […] Read more

With the increasing incidence of herbicide resistance, producers must adjust their strategies to manage kochia and other resistant weeds.

Your provincial weed outlook for 2023

Make sure these weeds are on your radar this year

For as long as agriculture has existed in Western Canada, farmers have been waging a battle to control yield-robbing weeds in their fields. It will be a similar story in 2023. The difference this time around is that battle could be shaped largely by the location where it is being fought. While Manitoba received significant […] Read more

Manufactured in Saskatoon, Sask., the Redekop Seed Control Unit can be fitted onto the back of a combine to provide harvest weed seed control.

Use multiple strategies to control weeds in your crops

Rising herbicide resistance means it’s time to broaden your weed control arsenal with chemical, mechanical and non-chemical methods

Herbicides have long been the go-to solution for Prairie grain producers fighting weed infestations. Over time, it has led to widespread resistance development in many weed species and a shrinking list of chemical options for controlling pervasive weeds like kochia and wild oats that have become resistant to multiple modes of action in recent years. […] Read more

In Alberta, kochia patches could form in new parts of the field or neighbouring fields where tumbleweeds may have blown, says AAFC’s Shaun Sharpe. Approaches and compacted areas may also be potential areas of invasion and spread as well as along roadsides, grid roads and field margins and around sloughs. Weed specialist Clark Brenzil highly recommends preventing the growth of kochia by planting perennial forages in ditches and even in saline (or otherwise non-productive) areas in fields.

Weed issues to watch in 2022

How different factors, such as moisture, temperature, herbicide resistance and others, may affect weed populations this year

After a series of dry years on the Prairies — with 2021 being driest of all — the provincial weed outlook for 2022 is varied across Western Canada and field to field. From kochia invading new territory to a possible increase of overwintering weeds — such as later-emerging false cleavers, Canada thistle, shepherd’s purse and […] Read more

Three fundamental elements to manage weeds

Three fundamental elements to manage weeds

Q & A with an expert

Q: What can I do to reduce potential herbicide-resistance issues? A: Driver weed populations on a farm level tend to remain relatively consistent over time. Some species may move into cropland from field edges and pasture lands and others may leave with reduction in tillage. Generally, the weed species that cause most issues on a […] Read more

Weeds exactly like the one shown above were found in Lucas’ corn field after he sprayed
with Roundup.

Crop advisor casebook: Why is this Manitoba field full of pigweed?

A Crop Advisor's Solution from the September 21, 2021 issue of Grainews

Lucas farms near Starbuck, Man., growing corn, soybeans, wheat, oats and canola. I received a call from Lucas at the end of June last year. He suspected he had some herbicide efficacy problems, as he noticed some redroot pigweed was not dying after he sprayed a field of corn with Roundup. “It’s been three weeks […] Read more
