Getting ready for calving season

Eppich News: Milking two cows leads to a wide range of homemade dairy products

January passed by in a blink of an eye. Gregory fed cows every day and usually had to move snow around to either feed or to bed. Overall, the weather was pretty nice, so the boys and I would work on some schoolwork in the mornings, and then go out and play in the afternoon. […] Read more

The Eppich Quarter Horses had a good Christmas morning as well as the hay was rolled out.

Definitely a cold, snowy start to winter

Eppich News: Blowing snow made it a challenge to feed the cows

December was cold and windy. It was too cold for little Ian to be out at all, and Joseph and James were not allowed to be outside for very long. Usually they got bundled up and then played a little bit on their walk over to Grandma’s house. They had fun but were quite sad […] Read more

As we headed out to find the horses that got out of their pasture, Joseph decided he wanted to come along. A halter was placed on a quiet gelding he was able to lead back into the pasture.

Eppich News: Horses find a frozen pathway across the slough

Sunday Nov. 13 turned out to be an interesting day. It had been quite cold and then it snowed. This combination was just perfect for our horses to walk across the frozen slough. At church a neighbour told us that he had seen some horses along the road. After church, Gregory took the truck to […] Read more

A quick trip to the States to visit family

Quite a few chores were accomplished before winter arrived

After finishing harvest Oct. 8, we started making plans to travel to Idaho to see family and friends. A couple of days later we dug our potatoes with the help of the neighbours, Leon and Audrey. October 12 we had one of our Eppich Quarter Horse weanlings go to her new home. As soon as […] Read more

It didn't take much of a tumble for James to hurt his elbow, but it was a bit of process to get necessary repairs
made. It will take time to heal, but he is handling it well.

Harvest done in time for Thanksgiving

Dealing with health care was a matter of hurry up and wait

The end of September had a few bumps for us. After the rain on Sept. 19, it was too wet to combine for a few days. Instead, I baled some flax straw while Gregory and the neighbour, Leon, worked on John’s new well. Harvest started again Sept. 24. We worked on John’s oats for a […] Read more

Harvest got underway in late August, first with the peas to be combined and then (above) moving into harvest wheat. Except for one rainy day, so far the weather has been great.

Harvest season is well underway

Eppich News: Well water starts flowing to the garden, while it’s a challenge to keep combine air conditioning running

Early August was a busy combination of working summerfallow and beginning to cut hay in the ditches. On August 7 we had a fun family Sunday. In the afternoon we took the boys and John and Barb out to the pasture at Landis and we had a hot dog and marshmallow roast. It was a […] Read more

Great success in drilling water wells

Eppich News: A busy month as old friends come to visit and haying gets underway

There is no rest for the wicked this summer. The old hayfield that we converted into a pasture this spring had been running short of water and so we were trying to figure out how to best manage our pastures and the low water situation. We were desperately wanting to take some bales off of […] Read more

By early March calving was well underway with two or three new calves every day.

The Eppich family welcomes a baby boy

Eppich News: Babies are arriving on all fronts, so not much sleep these days

February was an exciting month for our family. The weather continued to be a roller coaster with freezing rain followed by days of -40 C with a bitterly cold wind. We did a little bit of work on our bull corral, moved quite a bit of snow around and Gregory did quite a bit of […] Read more

James and Joseph where proud to wear hand-drawn horse tee-shirts made by great-grandmother Thomas in Idaho.

All the 2021 bales are now home

Eppich News: Some decent weather but then -40 C and a blizzard

There were a few nice days in the middle of January. On Jan. 13, Gregory and I were able to get the last of the slough bales hauled home. We saved the closest for last as they were in the field that is southeast of the home quarter. I drove the tractor around while Gregory […] Read more

It takes a little more than cold temperatures to keep the Eppich men, Gregory and sons Joseph and James, from a successful mission to track down a Christmas tree.

The New Year begins with frigid temperatures

Eppich News: It was so cold it made it easier to make a clean cut on tires for feeders

By the middle of December, the temperature had dropped quite a bit. Gregory and John were able to haul most of the slough bales home. It was slow going but it’s good to have more bales home. Some of the bales are good for bedding and some were good enough this year for feed. Right […] Read more
