SeedMaster’s new downsized model

The company says all of its good seeding features are now available in a smaller package

The new 24-foot-wide SeedMaster drill has all of the same features as a 100-foot-wide machine, except this one will fit in a proverbial pocket. Its sides fold up to make a compact 10-foot-wide unit that’s 12.5 feet in height — that makes for easier transport, it’s easier to fit through gates, if applicable, and it takes up much less room in the shed for winter storage.

If you have been impressed by the features and performance of the SeedMaster seeding system, but a 100-foot-wide unit is just way more drill than you need, the good news is the company has put all of those great seed placement features in a much smaller package.

At the AgSmart farm show staged by Olds College last year, SeedMaster introduced its seed drill with a 24-foot-wide toolbar. The company has marketed drills ranging from 40 to 100 feet (in 10-foot increments) for several years, but now for ranchers or farms with fewer acres to seed, along comes this narrower unit.

The drill has a narrower toolbar and has all of the features of the larger seeding systems but in a smaller, more manoeuvrable, size — and with a lower price tag.

According to SeedMaster, the 24-foot drill will be an excellent fit on farms with 1,000 acres or less to seed.

Along with SeedMaster’s trademark dual opener, which has a reputation for very accurate seed and fertilizer placement resulting in fast and more even crop emergence, the 24-foot-wide unit has standard features including the following:

Dual UltraPro II on-frame tanks, including a 100-bushel seed tank and 120-bushel fertilizer tank.

For smaller grain farming or mixed farming operations that don’t have as many acres to seed, the narrower SeedMaster air drill can get the crop seeded with a great deal of accuracy but is much easier on the bank account. photo: Lee Hart

The system has an electric seed metering system. There is no seed distribution tower on the 24-foot drill. The electric metering system delivers seed directly and gently to each seed run. Gentle handling translates into reduced risk of seed damage and improved germination rates.

  • The UltraPro II electric metering system has zone control.
  • The 24-foot-wide toolbar is outfitted with shanks on 12-inch row spacing, which equals 24 seed rows.
  • While it is 24 feet wide in the fully open position, the sides fold up to a compact 10-foot-wide unit that’s 12.5 feet in height for transport mode.
  • A neat feature is each wing on the drill can be raised and locked in position independent of each other.

  • Hydraulic requirements are 25 to 30 gallons per minute at 3,000 pounds per square inch, three selective control values, opener raise/lower, wing folding and fan.
  • The drill and metering system requires 12-volt, 50-amp continuous power supply.
