New investment model provides capital for land acquisitions and farmland improvement

With investments from Area One Farms, an Alberta farmer expands his operation so his kids and their families can return home to farm

It was seven or so years ago that Kurt Cole realized he needed a bigger farm. Three of his five daughters and their families wanted to return home to farm with Cole, so the Alberta grain producer started searching for a way to raise $7 million — the price tag for some nearby land belonging […] Read more

Germination and vigour have been affected by damage to pulse crop seeds. Extremely dry conditions during the growing season and at harvest and a period of extremely cold conditions for a few weeks in early winter contributed to increased levels of seed cracking as shown in the yellow peas above.

Seed quality, seed supply and management tips for 2022

Deal with reputable seed suppliers and make sure all seed batches are tested ahead of the seeding season

Not that it is a major news blast, but if they haven’t done so already western Canadian farmers need to be thinking now about getting seed sources lined up for the 2022 growing season. Also, if they’re planning to use farm-saved seed, make sure it is properly tested for germination and vigour. The 2021 growing […] Read more

The 70-foot-wide Seed Hawk air drill at Bailla Farms has a 980-bushel tank with four compartments. With sectional controls every 10 feet across the width of the drill, it is very responsive to variable-rate seed and fertilizer placement as it passes over 10 different production zones in each field.

Do SWAT Maps deliver?

Farmers say layered information allows them to apply inputs where they do the most good

Colin Rosengren and Kelly Baillargeon farm on almost opposite ends of Saskatchewan, yet they have the same thinking when it comes to what they expect from precision farming and variable-rate technology (VRT). Rosengren owns Rosengren Farms along with family members at Midale, in southeast Saskatchewan, while about 650 kilometres to the northwest, Baillargeon owns Bailla […] Read more

This photo of a field sprayer outfitted with two cameras on the boom is an example of a new service being introduced by Croptimistic Technology this year called SWAT Cams. As the sprayer travels over the crop, the cameras will take pictures every 50 feet. The images are analyzed by software and used to show the amount of biomass cover over every acre. The variation in ground cover will be of value in making management decisions about increasing or decreasing inputs, such as seeding and fertility rates.

Crop pictures worth a few thousand footsteps

Croptimistic Technology, based out of Naicam, Sask., perhaps better known by its SWAT Maps brand name, is launching two new services in 2022 to make it easier and more affordable to map the soil and topography of the whole farm, and then literally view every acre of the crop during the growing season.  SWAT Cams […] Read more

Tips to conserve soil moisture and manage weeds this spring

Tips to conserve soil moisture and manage weeds this spring

Plus, where tillage fits in and how and when it could be used

Although it has only been on most farmers’ radars for the last couple of decades, no-till production has become a modern-day success story, with well over half of Canadian farmland now being farmed under its practices. However, no till relies heavily on herbicides to manage weeds and retain soil moisture. And with key herbicides like […] Read more

Vincent Pawluski didn’t set out to go into the remote control manufacturing business, but he was encouraged to share the equipment he’d developed for his own farm with other producers. Coming up with a design, developing a prototype and then taking that to 3-D print manufacturing was all something he learned along the way.

Remote-controlled device saves steps, improves safety

No need to make multiple trips in and out of the tractor cab with wireless PTO controller

Vincent Pawluski is one of those farmers who sees a situation in day-to-day farm work and figures there must be a better way to get the job done. A little more than a year after a light-bulb moment in the cab of his combine on his Peace River region farm, Pawluski and family are now […] Read more

The iMetos 3.3 is the premier weather station from Metos Canada designed for sophisticated field monitoring and forecasting.

How IoT technology can help you make better farm decisions

A connected network of sensors, soil probes and in-field weather stations can deliver detailed data that’s accurate and up to the minute

There’s lots of talk these days around the “connected farm” and the growing slate of tools to help producers boost productivity, increase efficiencies and reduce risks on their farms. An important aspect of this technology is IoT or internet of things. IoT allows interconnected devices to measure many kinds of agronomic variables and relay this […] Read more

The farm business plan should be an extension of the goals and aspirations of the individual team members.

How to build a robust farm business plan

Now that you’ve got a strong farm team, it’s time to focus on the farm business plan

In my previous article for Grainews, I explained how team building is important on farms in today’s complex agricultural environment. It’s vital all members of the team have input into the overall farm business plan and have at least some of their individual needs met. A team with a common understanding of the intent and […] Read more

Once hazards have been identified, the onus is on the farmer to make changes that reduce or eliminate risks to workers.

Tips to reduce your farm risk

Tools include equipment breakdown and business interruption insurance and safety hazard assessments

There’s no shortage of risks when you grow crops for a living. As a farmer, you’re accustomed to coping with weather extremes, weed resistance, disease outbreaks, insect infestations and other threats to your hard-earned yields. But are you doing enough to manage other risks, like safety hazards on your farm or essential equipment breakdowns? Farm […] Read more

Saskatchewan producer Stuart Lawrence minimizes his insecticide use by letting lady beetles, a natural enemy of his problem aphids, do as much of the work as possible.

Beneficial insects play key roles on Prairie farms

The benefits of beneficials are many and varied, some parasitize or feed on crop pests while others can pollinate crops and improve seed set

A growing number of crop producers are recognizing the role of beneficial insects on their farms. It seems like just about every crop pest has a natural enemy that can keep their populations at bay, while many crops have beneficials that aid their growth and sustainability. Stuart Lawrence, Dean Hubbard and Ian Steppler are three […] Read more
