BeGrainSafe provides valuable training for firefighters

BeGrainSafe is an important part of the safety programs offered by the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA). Through the BeGrainSafe initiative, firefighters are trained on how to respond to grain entrapment incidents, which can be a danger on grain farms. At the heart of the program is the BeGrainSafe Trailer, a mobile training and demonstration unit that allows firefighters to have practical, hands-on experience in grain extraction processes.

CASA is pleased to announce more than 600 firefighters from 25 fire departments received BeGrainSafe training from February through November in 2022. That’s a 30 per cent increase in the number of firefighters trained in 2021.

The BeGrainSafe program trained firefighters in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec in 2022. For 2023, training starts in Ontario this month.

Poor-fitting PPE adds more farm safety hazards for women

Despite decades of calls for change, women on farms and in other workplaces are still made to struggle with ill-fitting and uncomfortable personal protective equipment (PPE).

“The continued success and need for the BeGrainSafe training shows just how important this program is,” says Andrea Lear, CEO of CASA. “It is with thanks to many individuals and organizations that more firefighters than ever have taken part in this life-saving training. BeGrainSafe master trainers, fire departments, local community members and sponsors all worked hard to make each training session successful.”

The BeGrainSafe program would not be possible without the generous support of sponsors, which include the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, G3, Corteva Agriscience, CN, FMC, Agriculture Financial Services Corporation, Alberta Canola, Alberta Wheat, Bayer Crop Science, Canadian Canola Growers Association, Farm Credit Canada, Nutrien Ag Solutions, SaskCanola, Sask Wheat, Viterra, Manitoba Canola Growers, Grain Farmers of Ontario and Prairie Oat Growers Association.
