Can-Am has a new cab option on its Defender 6X6.

New for the 2022 model year from Polaris is the Ranger SP 570, which is available in two- or four-seat configurations.

The two-seater comes with a liquid-cooled 567-cubic centimetre, 44-horsepower gasoline engine with all-wheel drive, two-wheel drive and VersaTrac Turf Mode drive system, which unlocks the rear differential to minimize ground damage on turns.

The 73-inch (185 centimetre) wheelbase allows for a 33.3-inch manual tilt box with gas cylinder lift assist and a 500-pound (226 kilogram) load capacity. Total machine load rating is 1,000 pounds (453 kilograms). At the rear, a two-inch receiver hitch is standard, and the SP 570’s tow rating comes in at 1,500 pounds (680 kilograms).

Drone tenders proliferate at Ag in Motion

The selection of drone support tenders — units built to serve as landing pad, operator station and refill platform for large agricultural drones — on display at Ag in Motion suggests more of the farmer population at large may now be seeing drone tech’s potential applications in their own fields.

At only 56 inches wide, the SP 570 can fit through some narrow gates and turn completely around in just over 12 feet (3.65 metres), making it pretty manoeuvrable.

The brand says the new SP 570 has an increased clutch size for better power transfer and better low-speed performance.

The Crew (four-seater) version of the SP 570 gets its wheelbase stretched to 105 inches (266.7 centimetres) to allow for second-row seating and four-passenger capacity. At the rear, the box size stays the same as the two-seater version, but payload capacity jumps to 1,225 pounds (555.6 kilograms).

If you prefer to have an electric motor under the hood of your side-by-side, Polaris now has the all-electric Ranger EV. A single 48-volt electric motor puts out 30 horsepower and delivers it through the same drive system options available in the other Rangers. The Ranger EV has slightly smaller dimensions than the Ranger 570, but it maintains the same payload and towing ratings.

The Ranger EV has a base price of $16,499 compared with $13,899 for the Ranger SP 570.

CAN-AM

Here in Grainews, we’ve taken a close look at Can-Am’s Defender 6X6 UTV in previous issues. With a 6X6 driveline, it is capable of impressive traction. Now, the brand has added a new option on this heavy-duty machine, giving it a new, fully enclosed cab with automotive-style climate control to improve occupant comfort. A new colour-matched door design allows for increased visibility and better protection as well as improved weather sealing.

Also new to the model year 2022 lineup is a Can-Am Defender Max Lone Star Cab model. Can-Am launched the Defender Lone Star Edition in 2018 as a utility-recreational vehicle with premium features. Now, it too gets a premium version with the addition of a cab with interior climate control. A full enclosure and premium full doors keep the air conditioning and heat in, maximizing comfort. The new Defender Max Lone Star Cab also comes with a factory-installed JL Audio Roof that lets riders play their favourite soundtrack for the day — and be able to hear it over the engine noise.

The Lone Star Cab model boasts a 115-inch (294 centimetre) wheelbase and a payload capacity of 1,300 pounds (590 kilograms). Its tow rating is a hefty 2,500 pounds (1,134 kilograms). To provide the muscle for that, it gets power from a 976-cc V-twin 82-horsepower Rotax engine with six pound-feet of torque. It delivers that power through a driveline with selectable Turf Mode, two-wheel and four-wheel drive with Visco-Lok auto-locking front differential.

The Defender Max Lone Star Cab model has a base MSRP of $33,199.
