Two new PT sprayers from Amazone

New UX series models offer 8,000- and 9,000-litre tank capacities

Amazone UX 7801 and UX 8601 pull-type sprayers are available with tank capacities of 8,000 and 9,000 litres and boom widths of up to 138 feet.

Although pull-type sprayers have largely fallen out of favour in the North American market in recent decades, they remain popular in Europe. Germany-based Amazone is one of several manufacturers that produce a full line of pull-type and self-propelled models. The brand currently offers PT sprayers here in Canada.

Swather-sprayer retrofit a clever solution to winter wheat’s tight planting window

A system to spray pre-seed herbicide at the same time as swathing isn’t just a clever labour-saver, but could help overcome one of the biggest obstacles keeping Prairie farmers out of winter wheat: the timing.

Last August, Amazone announced the addition of two new high-capacity PT models to its existing UX line. The UX 7601, which has an 8,000-litre tank, and the UX 8601, which has an even larger 9,000-litre tank, have become the largest single-axle models in the UX line. These sprayers can be equipped with up to a 138-foot (42-metre) boom. All of that capacity and no need to maintain another powered machine might make Prairie producers reconsider the value of a modern pull-type sprayer.

The drawback, of course, is giving up the high-clearance feature offered by almost all self-propelled machines.

To keep the same manoeuvrability and stability of a single-axle, pull-type sprayer, yet boost overall capacity, Amazone has designed a completely new chassis for the 7601 and 8601 to ride on. The forward-sloping chassis design provides even distribution of the sprayer weight between the axle and tractor drawbar. It also lowers the centre of gravity for improved stability on hillsides or when making high-speed turns.

Although not a typical high-clearance design, the chassis has a decent ground clearance. To help minimize crop damage, tall and easily damaged crops can be protected by an optional underbelly cover. And an optional self-steering axle allows the sprayer to track exactly behind the tractor wheels. The new UX Super design also offers a comparatively low weight for such a high payload to reduce soil compaction problems.

The polyethylene main tank has a unique design with a narrow upper portion that allows freshwater tanks to be mounted on either side of it, which also improves stability. The round shape and very smooth inner walls aid in tank cleanouts.

The Super-L3 four-fold boom design is available in working widths from 128 to 138 feet. Smaller booms are also available. Reduction joints on the outer sections allow the booms to be used at reduced widths. And one-side boom folding allows the inner section to fold in order to clear obstacles. Breakaway joints at the aluminum outer section help to prevent damage when striking an object. The booms get ContourControl active boom guidance and SwingStop active vibration dampening as standard equipment. Conical hinge pins at the folding joints are maintenance-free. With no play at the joints, the boom remains stable.

When folded, the L series boom does not extend forward of the sprayer to minimize the risk of damage during transport.

Both sprayers get a 350-litre-per-minute agitation pump and a 250-litre-per-minute spray pump, which can be run either via PTO or hydraulic drive. The hydraulic pump drive is fully integrated into the ISOBUS control, which can regulate the pump speed automatically depending on operating needs. With the very wide boom working widths and high forward speeds, the UX models’ intelligent control technology allows both pumps to be used to meet high volume spray requirements, while still maintaining adequate tank agitation.

The SmartCenter settings control centre and complete operator station are located under the access cover on the left side of the sprayer beside the 60-litre-per-minute induction bowl. There is an available manually operated Standard-Pack or the Comfort-Pack, which includes the TwinTerminal 3.0, or the Comfort-Pack Plus with a touch screen, which can be used even when wearing gloves. This option includes automatic fill stop for suction filling, auto-dynamic fill level dependent agitator regulation and remote-controlled cleaning programs.

When it comes to purchase costs, buyers will notice taking home UX 7601 or UX 8601 will do a lot less damage to a bank account. A well-equipped UX 7601 prices out at around C$237,000. That’s about a third of the cost of some new SP models with comparable capacities.
