The silver service body mounted on a 335 Peterbilt at Automatic Truck and Trailer Sales’ display during the Manitoba Ag Days show was bound to make anyone green with envy.
The large aluminum service body was custom built by Total Works Truck and Equipment in Brandon, according to Ray Lewis, sales rep for Automatic Truck and Trailer Sales, also of Brandon. The two companies decided to get together to present a road-ready field service truck at the show.
“They do all our fabrication on trucks, safeties, frame stretching,” said Lewis. “So we got together with them to put one on our truck.”
The service body built for the show included a compartment for an oxy-acetylene system and others for tools with pull-out drawers. Two liquid tanks were built into the body, a 3,653 litre container capable of holding any type of fluid and a second with a capacity of 1,000 litres for diesel exhaust fluid. The truck was also rigged for an onboard air compressor.
The drive-it-away retail price of that unit, including the truck, was $96,900.
According to Lewis, producers are increasingly looking for field service trucks with larger overall capacities and more features, allowing them to take more equipment to the field. Having all the right equipment right at hand helps make emergency repairs and maintenance faster and easier.
“Last year a guy wanted one and had it custom built,” explains Lewis. “That’s how this all got started. Everybody saw what it was and how it was built and said, ‘yeah, we can use something like that.’”
But rather than stick with just one version of the body, the two companies will spec out a truck and service body combination to meet the specific requirements of any producer.
“Everybody’s views on what they need for accessories is different,” said Lewis. “They’ll built whatever you want.”
