New corn varieties for 2022

Next year there’ll be 23 new corn options in the offing for producers in Western Canada. BrettYoung, Corteva, Dekalb, Horizon Seeds, Maizex, NorthStar Genetics, Pride Seeds, Proven Seed and Thunder Seed are all releasing new corn hybrids for the coming growing season. Please note, the following list includes only brand new releases for 2022.

BrettYoung

BY Brava RR2 (2250 CHU grain, 2150 CHU silage) is an early maturity Roundup Ready 2 corn line with great silage and grazing characteristics. Specifically designed for the needs of western Canadian cattle growers, this high-yielding hybrid is broadly adapted and features a slower drydown for a wider harvest window for silage as well as very good root and stalk strength for excellent standability in grazing applications.

Corteva: Pioneer

P7574AM (2150 CHU) features LibertyLink, Roundup Ready 2 and Optimum AcreMax traits and is well suited for grain performance and maturity for the Red River Valley and southern Alberta. It provided consistent yield performance across various conditions or soil types where tested. P7574AM has average root and stalk strength and offers excellent early season vigour and emergence, above-average test weight and great silage characteristics with strong performance.

P7844AM (2225 CHU) features LibertyLink, Roundup Ready 2 and Optimum AcreMax traits and is suited for southern Manitoba. It features very good yield potential and above-average stalk and root strength along with good resistance to Goss’s wilt.

P8294AM (2400 CHU) features LibertyLink, Roundup Ready 2 and Optimum AcreMax traits. P8294AM has a tall plant stature and offers excellent early season vigour and great late season plant health. It also features good Goss’s wilt resistance and excellent silage characteristics with strong performance.

P8588AM (2550 CHU) features LibertyLink, Roundup Ready 2 and Optimum AcreMax traits and offers very good grain and silage yield potential for Western Canada. As well, it features a good stalk strength rating and good resistance to Goss’s wilt.

P8859AM (2600 CHU) features LibertyLink, Roundup Ready 2 and Optimum AcreMax traits. It offers excellent silage yield potential in tons per acre and is above average for stress emergence as well as stalk and root strength. P8859AM has an average test weight score and an average rating for Goss’s wilt resistance.

Dekalb

DKC36-86RIB VT2P (2625 CHU) is a VT Double PRO RIB Complete corn hybrid with an 86-day relative maturity and excellent emergence and seedling vigour. It has very good root and stalk strength as well as very good stay-green, drydown and Goss’s wilt protection. DKC36-86RIB VT2P performs best when planted at 34,000 to 36,000 plants per acre on highly productive ground.

DKC37-73RIB SS (2650 CHU) is a SmartStax RIB Complete corn hybrid with an 87-day relative maturity. It features excellent emergence and seedling vigour along with excellent stay-green and very good drydown, test weight, harvest appearance and drought tolerance. DKC37-73RIB SS performs best when planted at 34,000 to 36,000 plants per acre on highly productive ground.

DKC38-15RIB TRE (2675 CHU) is a Trecepta RIB Complete corn hybrid with an 88-day relative maturity and excellent emergence and seedling vigour. It features excellent root strength and test weight in addition to very good drydown and harvest appearance. DKC38-15RIB TRE performs best when planted at 34,000 to 36,000 plants per acre on highly productive ground.

Horizon Seeds

HZ 1398 (2200 CHU) is a grain corn with a 73-day relative maturity. The variety offers corn borer control along with glyphosate and glufosinate tolerance. It provides a big, early canopy and features consistent, semi-flex ears, good flare husk, good ear droop and quick drydown.

Maizex

MZ 1544DBR (2250 CHU) is a VT Double PRO RIB Complete corn hybrid with a 75-day relative maturity. This excellent dual-purpose option has rapid drydown and a strong disease package and moves well within its maturity range.

MZ 154 (2250 CHU) has a 75-day relative maturity and provides an excellent conventional option that offers rapid drydown and a strong disease package.

MS 8270R (2450 CHU) is a silage corn hybrid with an 82-day relative maturity and strong agronomics. It produces a tall, robust plant type with excellent standability, and it also has extended stay-green that preserves silage quality.

MS 8632R (2550 CHU) is an 86-day relative maturity Roundup Ready 2 hybrid that produces an attractive plant type for silage. It offers impressive tonnage as well as a strong agronomics package.

Northstar Genetics

NS 271 (2050 CHU) is a 71-day relative maturity VT Double PRO RIB Complete grain hybrid with an early flower and rapid drydown that make it an excellent choice for early season maturity zones. Its excellent early seedling vigour allows for a fast, early season start. NS 271 also offers strong yield, excellent grain quality and very good test weight.

NS 273 (2125 CHU) is a 73-day relative maturity Roundup Ready 2 grain and dual-purpose hybrid for early season maturity zones. NS 273 has an early flowering date and features strong seedling vigour and emergence, very good roots, and a determinate ear with 14 to 16 round kernel rows. Also, this hybrid offers excellent grain quality and very good drought tolerance.

Pride Seeds

A3939 G2 RIB (2025 CHU) is an ultra-early VT Double PRO RIB Complete grain hybrid that provides strong emergence and seedling vigour for a fast, early season start as well as early flowering and finish. It offers a good, consistent ear girth and has shown solid performance in stressed, tough conditions with a stable, high-yield potential.

A4323 G2 RIB (2200 CHU) is a VT Double PRO RIB Complete grain hybrid with very rapid drydown, which allows for an early harvest. It produces a medium/tall statured plant, consistent ear size and plant stature. A4323 also features good ear girth and length with excellent consistency in different environments.

Proven Seed

PV 61479 RIB (2250 CHU) is a VT Double PRO RIB Complete and Roundup Ready 2 hybrid. It offers very good yield performance, fast drydown and high test weight. PV 61479 RIB has excellent resistance to Goss’s wilt, and it also features very good resistance to northern corn leaf blight and good resistance to grey leaf spot.

PV 61377 RIB (2200 CHU) is a VT Double PRO RIB Complete and Roundup Ready 2 hybrid. It has good stalks and roots and offers very high yield performance for its maturity. This early flowering corn performs best in high-yielding environments and features strong defensive traits with very good resistance to Goss’s wilt and good resistance to northern corn leaf blight and grey leaf spot.

PV 62181 SRIB (2350 CHU) is a VT Double PRO RIB Complete and Roundup Ready 2 hybrid. It is an excellent silage and grazing option with very strong yield potential under a wide range of growing conditions. Featuring strong stalks and very good early season vigour, PV 62181 SRIB is very early to flower, reducing maturity risk. It offers good resistance to grey leaf spot, northern corn leaf blight and Goss’s wilt.

Thunder Seed

TH6072 VT2P (2025 CHU) has a 72-day relative maturity and offers great emergence and seedling vigour and fast drydown for early planting and harvesting success. This VT Double PRO RIB Complete hybrid also has very good test weight and has a nice fall appearance with good stalks, stay-green and intactness.

TH6278 VT2P (2225 CHU) has a 78-day relative maturity and provides exceptional performance and solid agronomics with very good vigour, standability, stay-green and drydown. This VT Double PRO RIB Complete hybrid is strongly adapted to Western Canada and has good drought tolerance to handle those tough and variable acres.
