Manitoba migrant workers bid adios to union

A group of migrant Mexican farm workers at a Portage la Prairie mushroom farm have pulled the plug on their union certification.

The 26 employees of Mayfair Farms made history in 2007 by signing union cards and striking a collective agreement. 

The historic certification was controversial right from the start, with the employer claiming the workers had been misled by the union and the union claiming the workers were being intimidated.

In a vote taken June 25, the employees unanimously voted to drop their affiliation with the United Food and Commercial workers. As a result the Manitoba Labour Relations Board revoked the workers’ union certification on July 9.
