CNS Canada –– Freezing temperatures are in forecasts for parts of Manitoba and Saskatchewan over the next 24 hours, which could create more stress for emerging fields as farmers are still busy reseeding after the last frost.

Environment Canada is forecasting lows of -1 to -2 C across much of the agricultural regions of Manitoba and into eastern Saskatchewan for early Saturday morning (May 30).

Many crops are said to be in a vulnerable stage in Manitoba, with canola fields already reported to be seeing some reseeding across much of the province, following freezing temperatures and heavy rains over the Victoria Day long weekend (May 16-18).

“Anytime there are crops out of the ground… it’s a concern,” said Pam De Rocquigny, a crops specialist with Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Development at Carman.

“If, and when, the frost event happens (any damage) will depend on a few factors,” De Rocquigny said, pointing to crop staging, how cold it got, and how long the temperatures held below freezing.

Wind and flea beetle damage were also leading to reseeding in some canola fields this year, she said.
