VIDEO: AgGronomyTV: Technology to improve farming practices

Technology and innovation are key principles employed at Rutherford Farms near Grosse Isle, Man. But with all this data at a farmer’s fingertips, how can it be turned into action, and more importantly, what tools are needed to reach their goals? At a Manitoba 4R Day earlier this summer, Danielle Bérard, Innovation Farms manager with EMILI, spoke about how data and technology are being used at Rutherford Farms to help problem-solve and increase efficiency.

VIDEO: AGGronomyTV: The 4Rs and the environment

Nov 1 to 15: The federal government is asking farmers to implement voluntary targets to help reduce nitrous oxide emissions in crop production. Thankfully, there are ways to help growers accomplish this, not the least of which are implementing the 4R’s (right source, right rate, right time, and right place) when it comes to applying fertilizer to field crops. At the EMILI field day near Grosse Isle, Manitoba, this past summer, Mario Tenuta with the University of Manitoba spoke about the emissions reduction initiative, what’s missing on the Prairies when it comes to the 4Rs, and field research that showed the difference in nitrous oxide emissions between shallow- and deep-banded fertilizer in canola.

Bats can feast on field pests from suitable haunts

Having a healthy bat population is not going to be a straight substitute for a strong integrated pest management system on the farm, but as University of Winnipeg bat expert Dr. Craig Willis explains, the potential benefits of having them around can’t be overlooked.

VIDEO: AGGronomyTV: Honeybees: the workhorses of agriculture

Oct 15 to 31: It's hard to underestimate the value that honeybees provide to crops in Canada, but their pollination efforts have been measured in the range of billions of dollars per year. With such a valuable co-worker at the side of crop growers it's right to ask, just how healthy are these hard-working honeybee populations? In this video from Crop Diagnostic School recorded this past summer, Derek Micholson, apiarist with Manitoba Agriculture, provides an update to Manitoba's bee populations and shares how people can help pollinator populations thrive.
