Pulses: Canadian lentil exports running ahead of year ago pace

Winnipeg, Jan. 11 – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Monday, January 11.

– India continues to deal with pulse shortages, but prices have come under pressure in recent days, according to reports out of the country, as demand has backed away for some varieties.

– Canada has exported 496,800 tonnes of lentils during the 2015/16 (Aug/Jul) crop year to date, which is over 150,000 tonnes above the level moved during the same timeframe the previous year, according to the latest data from the Canadian Grain Commission. Pea exports are also strong, with the 1.357 million tonnes moved so far running slightly ahead of the previous year’s pace.

– Updated dietary guidelines were released by the USDA on January 7. The new food recommendations include a call to include more legumes, such as peas and lentils, as a protein source.

– Green pea prices in the C$8.80 to C$9.50 per bushel range are being reported in Western Canada. Meanwhile, yellow peas are moving higher, with bids as high as C$12.50 per bushel now reported in some locations. Red lentil bids as high as 57 cents per pound are being reported in some locations, while number two large green lentils are now hitting prices as high as 68 cents and number ones have topped 71 cents at some locations.

– Chickpea prices in Western Canada also remain strong, with large caliber Kabulis’s trading as high as 46 cents per pound.
