Pulses: Australian lentil plantings to increase

Winnipeg, March 28 – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Monday, March 28.

– The chairman of Pulse Australia says pulse crops (for human consumption) are the only growing segment of the country’s crop sector. Peter Wilson says prices will likely come down at some point but should remain healthy. Chickpea growers in northern Australia received prices as high as AU$850 per tonne last harvest while lentil prices in southern Australia are garnering bids of AU$1,250 per tonne, according to a report in farmweekly.com.au.

– The development manager for Pulse Australia says lentil plantings this year could be 35 percent higher than five years ago, according to a report in farmweekly.com.au. Mary Raynes forecasts actual plantings to total 245,000 hectares across the country. Raynes says chickpeas should also be higher but she expects a decrease in peas.

– An official with Manitoba Agriculture says edible bean acres could be slightly lower than last year’s figure of 128,000 acres. Dennis Lange says crops like field peas and lentils are just some of the other pulse crops that may cut into acreage. He estimates edible bean acres will be in the 110,000 acre range.
