Foxtail Barley Added To Assure II Label

Published: April 18, 2011

Foxtail barley has been added to the DuPont Assure II herbicide label, giving farmers in Western Canada a new option for managing this widespread weed. Assure II is an in-crop product registered for use on canola, flax, pulse crops and more, providing 99 per cent control of foxtail barley, leaving clean fields for the next cereal crop.

“There are no selective herbicides available to control foxtail barley in wheat,” says Andrew Stone, product manager for DuPont. Assure II allows farmers to manage this prolific weed within their weed control system and crop rotation.

Producers wrestle over organic standards draft

Organic farmers had until late July to comment on proposed new Canadian standards that would open the door to products such as municipally-derived struvite fertilizer — but would also crack down on lapses in organic management.

Foxtail barley thrives in a minimum-till environment. Since it germinates in the fall, foxtail barley emerges early in the spring making it difficult to control with a spring application of glyphosate alone.

Foxtail barley is added to the Assure II label at a rate of 0.5 L/ha and provides 99 per cent control at the three-to four-leaf stage of the weed and 97 per cent at the one-to three-tiller stage. Assure II also controls volunteer wheat, durum and barley, and has excellent wild oat and green foxtail control. It has excellent crop safety and a wide window of application. It’s also registered for aerial application.

Assure II is registered for use in canola, camelina, chickpeas, creeping red fescue (for seed production), dry common beans, flax, industrial hemp (fibre production only), lentils, peas (field and processing), seed alfalfa, seedling legumes (seed production), soybeans, snap beans and sugar beets.
