- Nonfarm payrolls in the United States increased by 114,000 jobs in July, which was down from a revised reading of 179,000 the previous month, according to a report from the country’s Labor Department. The slowdown in jobs growth saw the unemployment rate increase to 4.3 per cent and was seen as a sign that the economy could be vulnerable to a recession.

- Tensions continued to mount in the Middle East on Friday, with several airlines cancelling flights to Israel and Lebanon while also avoiding airspace in the region. Canada issued a notice Thursday that all Canadian aircraft should avoid Lebanese airspace for one month due to the risk of military activity in the area.
- Online sales growth for Amazon.com slowed in the second quarter as consumers looked for cheaper options, according to the company’s latest report. Online sales were up 5.0 per cent in the second quarter, at US$55.4 billion, which compares with the 7.0 per cent growth reported the previous quarter. As a result, Amazon shares were down by more than eight per cent in early Friday trade.
