WINNIPEG, July 6 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

 

  • Canadian International Trade Minister Mary Ng, United States Trade Representative Katherine Taj and Mexican Secretary of Economy Raquel Buenrostro arrived in Cancun on Thursday for two days of talks. The ‘Three Amigas’ are set to discuss the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement, with Ng and Buenrostro await for Taj to indicate whether the U.S. will or won’t abide by a tribunal ruling that rejected how it classifies foreign automotive content. Meanwhile, the U.S. has taken issue with Mexico’s move to limit genetically modified corn imports and with Canada’s dairy export quotas.

  • Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko announced on Thursday that the head of the Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, was no longer in the country. Lukashenko claimed Prigozhin left for St. Petersburg, Russia and that Russian authorities were not tracking the mercenary leader’s whereabouts. Last month Prigozhin led a short-lived rebellion against Russian President Vladimir Putin, which after its demise the Wagner boss fled to Belarus.

 

  • There were approximately 10 million sign-ups in the first seven hours of Threads being online, according to a report. The new social media platform launched on Thursday by Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is said to be a direct challenge to Twitter. Posts on Threads can be 500 characters and the two billion Instagram users can use their credentials to sign up.
