– The United States Supreme Court voted 6-3 on Monday to grant presidents immunity for official acts made in office, but not for those unofficial. The decision baffled many observers but bolstered former President Donald Trump as he faces trial for plotting to overturn the 2020 election and for illegally keeping classified documents at his Mar-A-Lago estate in Florida. President Joe Biden denounced the decision in a televised speech hours after the ruling, saying, “There are no kings in America … No one is above the law, not even the President of The United States.”

– The far-right National Rally party received the most votes in the first round of French parliamentary elections on Saturday at 33.15 per cent. The second and final round will take place on July 7. The New Popular Front, a coalition of left-wing and environmentalist parties, received 28.14 per cent. A centrist alliance led by current Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron was third at 20.76 per cent. Out of the 577 seats up for grabs, more than 300 will be contested by three or four candidates. Some left-wing candidates may drop out of their races in an attempt to unite against the National Rally. Macron called a snap federal election on June 9 despite low poll numbers.

– Hurricane Beryl made landfall on Monday before upgrading into a Category 5 storm, the earliest formation of that type of storm ever recorded. Barbados, Grenada, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and The Grenadines were in the storm’s path, causing severe damage and killing two residents. A hurricane warning remains for Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
