Global Markets: N.W.T. declares state of emergency

WINNIPEG, Aug. 16 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

 

  • The Northwest Territories has declared a state of emergency as wildfires threaten the capital of Yellowknife. Evacuation alerts have been issued for parts of the city, with other communities already evacuated.

 

  • Ukrainian grain storage facilities along the Danube River were struck by Russian drones, raising fresh concerns over movement from the region, according to reports. Meanwhile, a container ship that had been stranded in Odesa for more than 17 months was able to finally move along a temporary corridor established by Ukraine in the Black Sea.

 

  • The situation in Niger remains tense, with at least 17 Niger soldiers reported killed in an attack by armed groups near the Mali border. Another 20 soldiers were injured with more than 100 assailants ‘neutralised,’ according to army reports.

 

  • England defeated the host-country Australia 3-1 in a FIFA Women’s World Cup semifinal match and will play Spain in the final on Sunday.
