Global Markets: Israelis take to the street

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Thousands of protesters took to the streets and confronted police in Israel on Monday after the right-wing government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu passed a controversial law prohibiting the Supreme Court from reviewing some government decisions. Opposition lawmakers in the Knesset walked out in protest of the new legislation, accusing Netanyahu of bringing the country closer to autocracy. A political watchdog group and the Israel Bar Association have filed legal challenges to the new law.

– The Chinese government announced on Tuesday it has removed Foreign Minister Qin Gang from office and replaced him with predecessor Wang Yi. Qin, who was a proponent of China’s increasingly aggressive foreign policy, was relieved of his duties during a monthly gathering of the National People’s Congress. No explanation was given for his firing, but Qin had not been seen in more than a month. The Chinese government welcomed United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken and other top U.S. diplomats to Beijing earlier this month.

– A report by economists from Desjardins released on Tuesday is predicting an economic downturn for Canada in 2024. While the report stated that population gains have supported economic growth in every province so far this year, they “delay the downturn rather than preclude it.” The report added that “housing-exposed provinces” such as Ontario and British Columbia will be affected more by a slowdown than Alberta and Saskatchewan, which will benefit from commodity prices and increased production.
