Global Markets: Harper urges shift away from the U.S.

     – Former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said at an event in Ottawa on Wednesday marking 20 years since he became Prime Minister, that Canada must reduce its dependence on the United States to protect its sovereignty and a functioning economy. He called the U.S. “hostile” and described President Donald Trump as a “serious challenge”. Harper also called out members of the business community who assume “things will go back the way they were” when a U.S. government that “upholds a global order” returns. He also suggested that Canada impose tariffs on U.S. goods to protect the country’s manufacturing sector.

     – Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to announce on Thursday the return of electric vehicle rebates for consumers. Sources said the new strategy will remove the electric vehicle mandate imposed by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in favour of new emissions standards. An EV infrastructure fund worth C$1.5 billion will also be unveiled.

     – The Bank of England maintained its key interest rate at 3.75 per cent on Thursday with inflation above target and economic growth picking up. Five members of the Monetary Policy Committee voted in favour of keeping the rate steady while four preferred a quarter-point cut. BoE governor Andrew Bailey said he expects inflation to come down to two per cent by the spring.

     – The U.S. and Russia agreed to restore high level dialogue between their two militaries after officials met in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday. High level communication was suspended in 2021 before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Officials from the U.S., Russia and Ukraine were in Abu Dhabi for a second day of peace talks. However, two people were injured in Kyiv from overnight Russian drone strikes on Wednesday.
