- While no party or alliance won an outright majority in France’s second round of parliamentary elections on Sunday, the expected big win by the far-right National Rally didn’t materialize. With about two-thirds of French voters casting their ballots, the New Popular Front, an alliance of center-left and left-wing parties took 182 seats, with the centrist Ensemble Alliance next at 168. The NR, most likely to have scored a majority of upwards to 300, raised its seat count from 89 to 143. With a hung parliament, President Emmanuel Macron is expected to ask Prime Minister Gabriel Attal to stay on until a coalition emerges.

- A severe heat wave has been forecast to continue across the western United States on Monday, with temperatures in some locations expected to again exceed 50 Celsius. That included Death Valley, Cal. projected to hit 53C today. Heat warnings and advisories issued during the weekend encompassed nearly 57 million people in several states. Reports said at least one child in Arizona died from heat-related circumstances.
- The Canada Industrial Relations Board stated on Sunday the strike vote taken by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 514 was illegal. The board said the ILWU issued a strike notice to the British Columbia Maritime Employers Association based only on the results of a vote taken by its members at DP World Canada. The ILWU warned the BCMEA that its members would hit the picket lines on Monday at 4:30 pm Pacific. However, the BCMEA issued its own warning that it will lock out its workers on Tuesday at 4:30 Pacific. The federal government called on both sides to return to the bargaining table.
- Russia launched a daylight missile attack on a number of Ukrainian cities on Monday, with reports stating about 30 people are dead. In the worst airstrike in a month, missiles hit Kyiv’s main children’s hospital as well as three power-generating facilities. Missiles also struck Kryvyi Rih, Pokrovsk, Dnipro and Kramatarosk.
