- Ecuadorean presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio was assassinated on Wednesday while at a campaign event in the South American country’s capital, Quito. Villavicencio, a former journalist, was a vocal critic of organized crime and corruption in Ecuador. A state of emergency has been declared ahead of the Aug. 20 election, which is still set to go ahead as planned. Nine other people were injured in the shootout, with one suspect reported dead and six others arrested.

- Sudden wildfires in Hawaii have killed at least 36 people as the fires raged across the island of Maui. The fires have destroyed hundreds of buildings and forced some people to dive into the ocean to protect themselves from the flames.
- The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will hold a summit Thursday to discuss the situation in Niger, where a military coup displaced the democratically elected government at the end of July. ECOWAS has called for the end of the military takeover and the reinstatement of President Mohamed Bazoum. Niger’s coup leaders announced a list of 21 people who will reportedly become the country’s new government.
