Global Markets: Canola exports too focussed on China, U.S. says report

  • Canada’s canola exports are over-reliant on China and the United States, reports said on Tuesday. The Simpson Centre for Food and Agricultural Policy at the University of Calgary said those two countries account for almost 90 per cent of Canadian canola exports. Also, the report said Canada’s canola export infrastructure is geared for seed and not for products such as canola oil, further hampering opportunities.

  • Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to deliver his keynote address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Tuesday. Carney is expected to talk about Canada’s pragmatic approach to the emerging world order. The PM has faced criticism about not raising human rights issues when visiting dictators. Although Carney is departing Davos on Wednesday, the same day United States President Donald Trump arrives, a meeting between them has not been ruled out.
  • The U.S. stock markets are expected to open sharply lower on Tuesday, following the lead of the European markets, according to CNN. The declines are fueled by President Trump’s focus on acquiring Greenland and threats to tariff countries opposing his move. The VIX volatility index, known as the fear gauge, jumped to 27 per cent, the first time it moved above 20 since November.
  • Voters in Japan will be heading to the polls on Feb. 8, after Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said she will dissolve parliament on Friday. This comes after the Japan Innovation Party split from its coalition with the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. Takaichi is Japan’s first woman prime minister and has been in office for less than three months.
