Global Markets: Canada, China relations improving: ag minister

Glacier FarmMedia – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

     – Canadian Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald told Reuters on Monday, that relations between Canada and China are starting to heal. MacDonald said his trip included meetings with senior Chinese government officials as well as research and commercial agriculture executives, adding that they were willing to work with Canada on resolving their current issues. China effectively blocked Canadian imports of canola, peas and seafood earlier this year in response to Canada’s tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles. MacDonald said the EV tariffs were discussed in the meetings.

     – Diplomats from G7 nations will meet with Ukraine’s foreign minister Andrii Sybiha in Niagara-on-The-Lake, Ont. today as Russia escalates its attacks and makes incremental gains on the front-lines. The two-day meeting will also discuss shared economic and security challenges amongst the nations in attendance, which includes non-G7 members Australia, Brazil, India, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and South Korea. Russia’s latest attacks have disrupted Ukraine’s power grid, while its army took over three settlements in southern Zaporizhzhia.

     – Prime Minister Mark Carney will announce a second round of “nation-building projects” at a press conference in Prince Rupert, B.C. on Wednesday. Sources told CBC News there will be at least six projects, including the Sisson mine in New Brunswick, the Crawford Nickel project in Ontario, the Ksi Lisims liquefied natural gas project in B.C. Also said to be on the list are the Nouveau Monde Graphite Phase 2 mining project in Quebec and a hydroelectric plant project in Iqaluit. Carney said at a press conference in New Brunswick on Monday that the Major Projects Office’s mandate is a “living list” and new entries will be added.
