Global Markets: Biden tests positive for COVID-19

The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– United States President Joe Biden announced on Wednesday he tested positive for COVID-19 and will recuperate in his home state of Delaware over the weekend. Biden had planned to speak to Latino civil rights group UnidosUS in Las Vegas but instead went to the airport after testing positive. The White House said he had experienced minor upper respiratory symptoms, but Biden himself told reporters before boarding Air Force One that he felt good. After a lackluster performance in the first presidential debate, Biden is under pressure from some Democrats to step aside and allow someone else to run for president.

– Former U.S. President Donald Trump will make an address at the final night of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Thursday, where he will accept his party’s presidential nomination. On Wednesday, Trump’s newly-named running mate J.D. Vance addressed party members, promising to raise wages, compete with China in the world economy and let other nations pay for their own security. He also blasted Biden as well as Wall Street. Former Trump advisor Peter Navarro, who was released from his four-month prison term earlier that day, also addressed the crowd telling them that if the Department of Justice can imprison him, it can do the same for Trump.

– Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly is in China on an unannounced visit, where she will meet her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on Friday. The face-to-face meeting in Beijing, designed to alleviate tensions between the two countries, will be the first by a Canadian foreign minister in nearly seven years.

– The European Parliament re-elected Ursula von der Leyen to a second term as president of the European Union’s executive commission on Thursday, receiving 404 out of 707 votes. In a speech, she vowed to strengthen the European economy as well as police and border agencies, as well as delivering a rebuke of increasing ideological polarization in parliament.
