Global Markets: Bank of England holds rates steady

  • The Bank of England left its benchmark bank rate unchanged at 4.0 per cent on Thursday, after a 5-4 vote by its Monetary Policy Committee. Economists said the close vote and accompanying statement indicated that a cut could be coming at the next rate decision in December.
  • The Israeli military has escalated its attacks on Lebanon, with a wave of air attacks on southern part of the country reported Thursday. Israel said it was targeting Hezbollah leaders and military infrastructure. The attacks came as Hezbollah called on the Lebanese government not to negotiate with Israel.

  • Nova Scotia Member of Parliament Chris d’Entremont crossed the floor from the opposition Conservatives on Wednesday to join the Liberal caucus. He said he said he didn’t feel represented in the party anymore and bristled at leader Pierre Poilievre’s “negative” approach to politics. D’Entremont also said there are other Conservative MPs who “are in the same boat” and they may join him in crossing over to Liberals.
