– Fire officials in British Columbia announced on Sunday that conditions were improving after wildfires destroyed several homes in and around Kelowna, forcing residents to evacuate. Some residents are now allowed to return home, but will still be under an evacuation alert if needed. However, West Kelowna residents are still not allowed to return home for the time being.
– Tropical Storm Hilary, known as Hurricane Hilary until Monday morning, made landfall in Mexico’s Baja California peninsula on Sunday and then moved northward into California, dumping 80 millimetres of rain on Palm Springs by the evening. It was the first tropical storm seen in California in 84 years and brought six month’s worth of precipitation in some areas. San Diego saw 46 mm of rain, its wettest day ever, and all campuses in the Los Angeles Unified School District were closed on Monday.

– The newly-formed federal Liberal cabinet will meet in Charlottetown, P.E.I. from Monday to Wednesday on a retreat in order to prepare for the next sitting of Parliament. They will be briefed on a new report on housing availability and the economic despair of young Canadians as recent poll numbers show a growing lead for the Conservatives. Members of Parliament will resume sitting in the House of Commons on Sept. 18.
– Spain won its first ever FIFA Women’s World Cup title with a 1-0 victory over England in Sydney, Australia on Sunday. Spanish defender Olga Carmona, who plays her club soccer with Real Madrid, scored the game’s only goal in the 29th minute and learned after the match that her father had passed away. Sweden won the third place game 2-0 over co-host Australia on Saturday.
