– Just hours after giving a 72-hour strike notice to the British Columbia Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA), International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Canada revoked that same notice on Wednesday night, allaying fears of another strike. More than 7,400 workers were on strike from July 1 to 13, disrupting trade at coastal ports in the province. A tentative agreement assisted by a federal mediator was drafted earlier last week, but was not ratified by the union. Federal Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan said on Tuesday that the ILWU’s actions to return to the picket line were illegal.

– In the third straight night of air raids on Thursday, at least 18 people were injured from a Russian attack on the Ukrainian port city of Mykolaiv, while another two people were injured in the Odesa region. On Wednesday, Russia’s Ministry of Defence said it will treat all Ukrainian grain vessels as if they were military vehicles. On the same day, the United States government announced it will send an additional US$1.3 billion in assistance to Ukraine in order to purchase new military equipment and ammunition.
– A gunman stormed a high-rise construction site in Auckland, New Zealand on Thursday, killing two people. Four others in the building were injured, while a police officer was shot and the gunman was killed in a shootout. The shooting took place hours before the city hosted the opening match of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The match went ahead as scheduled, with co-host New Zealand scoring an upset 1-0 victory over Norway.
