Pulses: More countries begin selling chickpeas to India

Winnipeg, December 16 – Laird #1 lentils in Manitoba gained two cents over the past week. They are currently going for 61 to 68 cents per pound, according to the Prairie Ag Hotwire. Eston #1 lentils are up three cents during the same time-frame, they are going for 60 to 68 cents per pound.

Yellow peas in North Dakota rose by three-quarters of a cent in the past week, with bids ranging from C$8.29 to C$11.27 cents per bushel. The same peas were hanging steady in Western Canada with bids ranging from C$7.65 to C$9.00, according to data from Prairie Ag Hotwire.

A new study indicates the number of countries selling chickpeas to India is growing substantially. A story in The Weekly Times says researchers with the Grains Research and Development Corporation visited India to see what residents there cooked with. It found that many consumers were starting to buy chickpeas from the supermarket instead of local sellers. A few years ago there were just four main countries selling supplies to India but a recent count found there were now 12. Tanzania and Russia are just of the recent entrants. The chickpeas from Tanzania were said to be extremely high quality.
