Feed Grains: Lots of malt on Prairies despite wet year

WINNIPEG, Nov. 21 (CNS Canada) – CORN futures on the Chicago Board of Trade rose three to four cents per bushel on Monday taking strength from soybeans. The market received support from advances in crude oil as well.
Barley quality across Western Canada is on the wane due to excess moisture, according to a market-expert. However, Rod Green of Central Ag Marketing Ltd says there is still a decent amount of barley making its way to maltsters. He explains much of it is unchitted and unsprouted and domestic distributers are starting to get full.

The harvest in Alberta is about 87 percent complete, according to the latest report from the provincial government. Warm weather over the past two weeks has given many farmers in the south and central areas the chance to get off as much crop as possible. Farmers in Peace River and the northern areas of the province have had a tougher time as excess moisture has hampered heavy machinery.
An agronomist with Ducks Unlimited says this year’s warm autumn weather has greatly helped winter crops emerge. In a report by Farm Credit Canada, Saskatchewan’s Paul Thoroughgood says some winter wheat emerged after only five days. The downside is some acres will likely be lost to flooding.
Feed barley bids in the key cattle feeding area of Lethbridge, Alberta were in the C$172 to C$175 per tonne range as of November 18, which was up five dollars at the top end from the previous week, according to the latest pricing information from the provincial government. Top end feed wheat prices were up three dollars at the bottom end of the range, coming in at C$185 to C$190 per tonne in Lethbridge.
