Feed Grains: El Nino takes its toll on wheat

WINNIPEG, Feb. 22 (CNS Canada) – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world feed grains markets on Monday, February 22.

– CBOT corn futures rose two cents per bushel on Monday, with the March contract at US$3.6750 per bushel. Investor short-covering and stronger crude oil prices were credited with the increase.

– Japan and the Philippines have reportedly bought small amounts of feed quality wheat at a discount from cash, according to Tim Hannagan of Walsh Trading. Japan led the way with an order for 56,000 tonnes of feed wheat.

– 17 cows have died and 23 more were sickened after eating green fodder corn in India. According to a report in The Times of India, the corn was trucked in from Anand province to the Bhavagar district. An initial investigation suggests that pesticide may have been sprayed before the fodder was harvested.

– Feed barley bids in the key cattle feeding area of Lethbridge, Alberta were C$215 per tonne as of February 19, firming slightly compared to the previous week, according to provincial reports. Feed wheat prices held steady at C$230 to C$232.
