Saputo names new president, Canadian dairy COO

Published: December 1, 2011

Canada’s biggest dairy processor has promoted the chief of its Canadian dairy division to be the company’s new president.

Saputo Inc. has named Dino Dello Sbarba as its president and chief operating officer (COO) effective April 1, 2012. As president he replaces the company’s CEO, Lino Saputo Jr., who will remain in that role and as vice-chairman of the company’s board.

Dello Sbarba came to Saputo in 1990 as its national director for retail sales and marketing, and by 2001 was the president and COO for its Canadian cheese division. Since 2006 he has held the same title for the company’s Canadian dairy products division and on an interim basis for the company’s dairy business in Europe and Argentina.

Saputo executives reporting to Dello Sbarba will include Terry Brockman, the company’s president and COO for its U.S. dairy products division; Lionel Ettedgui, president and COO for the company’s bakery division; and Dello Sbarba’s replacement as president and COO for the Canadian dairy products division.

The latter will be Lorenzo Spinelli, who has worked with the company since 1998, most recently as its senior vice-president and general director for its dairy products divisions in Europe and Argentina. Spinelli’s appointment also takes effect April 1.

A newcomer to the company, Kai Bockmann, will replace Dello Sbarba starting Jan. 9 as president and COO of Saputo’s renamed dairy products (international) division, which encompasses its businesses in Europe and Argentina.

As the company’s overarching COO, Dello Sbarba will continue to report to CEO Lino Saputo Jr., son of the company’s current board chairman Lino Saputo, who with his own parents founded the dairy company in 1954.
