Canada’s second largest grain handler plans to continue to add capacity to its Prairie elevator system in 2009, on top of its $40 million worth of expansion work during 2008.
Richardson International Ltd., owners of the grain company Richardson Pioneer, said Thursday that they expect to have their 2008 expansions complete by year’s end at 16 facilities in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba and at Hamilton, Ont.
Of those projects, nine are finished, five are scheduled to be finished next month and two more are set for completion in December, the privately-held Winnipeg company said.

Projects to be completed next month include a 19,000-tonne fertilizer storage, blending and distribution facility at Legacy Junction, Alta., a 10,000-tonne storage expansion and rail car spot expansion to 104
cars’ capacity at Canora, Sask., a 10,000-tonne storage expansion at Carlton Crossing, Sask., rail car spot expansion to 112 cars’ capacity at Reed Lake, Sask. and a 1,000-tonne fertilizer storage and blender project at Minnedosa, Man.
Two more projects to follow in December include an 11,160-tonne storage expansion and rail car spot expansion to 112 cars’ capacity at Dunmore, Alta., and a 10,000-tonne storage expansion at Dixon, Sask.
“When completed, together these expansions will add
nearly 90,000 metric tonnes of storage to Richardson’s grain handling system, increase the
number of 100-plus car loading sites from 20 to 27 and introduce three more fertilizer storage,
blending and distribution facilities to the Richardson network,” the company said.
“Further expansions for 2009 are currently in the planning stage and will be announced early next year.”
