Prices for green lentils were steady to higher for the week ending Sept. 27, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire. A broker credited increased foreign demand.

“We had three years of very tight green lentil supplies, so people are replenishing their stocks basically, commented Marlene Boersch of Mercantile Consulting Venture Inc. in Winnipeg.

The largest uptick came with the French green lentils, rising five cents per pound at 49.5 to 55 cents/lb. delivered in Western Canada.

The Laird lentils incurred gains of three cents/lb. for all sizes, which brought the numbers ones were 54.5 to 56 cents. The price for the number twos were 52 to 56 cents/lb., with the number threes at 35.5 to 47.5/lb. and the X3’s at 45.5 to 51.5.

Alberta crop conditions improve: report

Varied precipitation and warm temperatures were generally beneficial for crop development across Alberta during the week ended July 8, according to the latest provincial crop report released July 11.

There were more modest gains for the Richleas, up one cent. The number ones garnered 48.5 to 50 cent/lb. and the numbers twos at 45 to 50. The number threes fetched 29.5 to 35.5 cents/lb. and the X3’s brought in 39.5 to 40.5.

Meanwhile, the Estons held firm with the number ones at 44.5 to 46 cents/lb., the number twos at 43.5 to 44.5, the number threes at 31.5 to 32.5 and the X3’s at 35.6 to 36.5.

Boersch said green lentils were being exported to South Africa, South America and to a lesser extent, India. She noted that green lentil demand within Canada is not that great.
