Bearish bets rise in canola futures

Bearish bets in the ICE Futures canola market hit their highest level in three months in mid-June, as speculative fund traders added to their large net short position, according to the latest Commitments of Traders report from the United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

Denmark will be first to impose CO2 tax on livestock emissions, government says

Denmark, a major pork and dairy exporter, will introduce a tax on livestock carbon dioxide emissions from 2030, making it the first country to do so and hoping to inspire others to follow, the government said on Tuesday.

Klassen: Canadian heifer retention tightening feeder supply

Alberta and Saskatchewan heifer placements in the lighter weight categories are down from year-ago levels. Comments from ranchers and order buyers suggest that Western Canadian ranchers are holding back on heifers to expand the herd. This usually results in a narrowing of the steer/heifer spread.

U.S. grains: Soybeans rise with flooding in the US upper Midwest

Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) soybeans rose on Monday as flooding hit the upper Midwest after a weekend of thunderstorms. Corn fell on acreage expectations ahead of a USDA report on Friday and wheat was down with analysts citing U.S. harvest pressure.

Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) nearby cattle future contracts turned higher on Monday as stronger-than-expected domestic seasonal demand and firm prices in the cash market gave futures a boost, market analysts said.

Canadian beef sector urges resolution on Cargill labour dispute

In a joint news release issued June 24, the Canadian Cattle Association (CCA), National Cattle Feeders’ Association (NCFA) and Beef Farmers of Ontario (BFO) strongly encouraged the Cargill Dunlop facility in Guelph and members of UFCW Local 175 to come to an expedited labour resolution. The CCA, NCFA and the BFO represent about 19,000 beef producers in Ontario and approximately 60,000 Canada-wide.

Durum wheat prices expected to decline: analyst

Klassen estimated that six million acres of durum wheat were seeded this year across Canada with expected production at approximately 7.5 million tonnes. In Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s (AAFC) monthly principal field crops outlook released on June 20, the agency estimated 6.343 million acres with production at 5.655 million tonnes. Statistics Canada (StatCan) will release their latest acreage estimates on June 27.
