The freight handling arm of McCain Foods has signed a deal to buy a Saskatoon truck transport company specializing in produce, meats and assorted fresh and frozen foods.
McCain’s Day and Ross Transportation Group on Tuesday announced the closing of its deal to buy G. Edwards Enterprises for an undisclosed sum.
“We gain a modern terminal in Saskatoon, which opens up new lanes in Western Canada for our truckload network, and we gain capacity to grow our LTL (less than truck load), small package and dedicated businesses,” John Doucet, CEO for New Brunswick-based Day and Ross, said in a release.

Day and Ross plans to integrate the Edwards terminal into its Fastrax division, the buyer said in its release.
Jeff Edwards, one of the owners of the 33-year-old G. Edwards business, will join Day and Ross’ management group, the buyer noted.
Apart from Fastrax, Day and Ross’ other divisions include Sameday Worldwide, Sable Warehousing and its self-titled general freight and contract logistics operations.
Day and Ross’ freight offerings include truckload and LTL service as well as rail containers and domestic and international air. It provides service within Canada as well as to the U.S. and Mexico through marketing partners.
Starting in 1950 with a single truck carrying New Brunswick potatoes, Day and Ross’ current Canadian holdings include 38 terminals, over 1,000 trucks and 1,800 dry, temperature-controlled and special-commodity trailers.
