MarketsFarm — Barley production in the U.S. is forecast to be up substantially in 2022, with early indications pointing to the largest crop in seven years.

In its latest production estimates, the U.S. Department of Agriculture forecast the country’s 2022 barley crop at 3.8 million tonnes, which would be up from the 2.6 million tonnes grown in 2021 — and the largest production since 2016.

Average yields are forecast at 70.3 bushels per acre, which compares with 60.4 bu./ac. in 2021 when many of the key barley growing states, such as North Dakota and Montana, were hit by a drought.

Oat production in the U.S. is also forecast to be up on the year, with USDA pegging the crop at 763,680 tonnes. That would be up by 32 per cent on the year but in line with the five-year average.
