Hog farmers in Nova Scotia will get immediate payments through the Targeted Advance Payment program to help deal with “financial difficulties” in the hog sector, Ag Minister Brooke Taylor announced Tuesday.
Eligible farmers will be contacted soon and given information on how much of an advance they may be eligible to get. Farmers who aren’t in the stabilization program now can apply for an interim payment to be eligible for aid in the 2007 program year, the province said.
“We are providing producers with funding from current programs, but in a more responsive manner for the short term,” Taylor said in a release.
Taylor implemented the payments in order to allow advances to be made, thus allowing the province to respond more quickly to “industry issues,” the province said.
The province noted that two new business risk management programs, AgriInvest and AgriStability, will soon be introduced to replace the Canadian Ag Income Stabilization (CAIS) program, to deal with small and larger margin declines, respectively.
