An old and “underutilized” Cargill crop input dealership west of Edmonton has been shuttered.
Cargill AgHorizons, the U.S. agrifood firm’s grain handling and ag input arm, announced Tuesday it had permanently closed the facility at Spruce Grove, Alta., effective Monday.
The facility’s employees have all been transferred to work at other Cargill outlets at Edmonton and nearby Leduc and handling equipment at the site is to be taken down, the company said.
Cargill said its decision is based on its “commitment to maintaining safe, cost-effective and efficient facilities in the communities in which they operate,” noting the Spruce Grove site was “of considerable age and currently underutilized.”

“We will continue to serve and partner with (farmer customers) by having our team of dedicated Cargill farm market representatives readily available to provide localized crop input solutions through our Edmonton and Leduc locations,” Allan Facchinutti, farm service group manager for the Spruce Grove location, said in the company’s release.
The company will also still offer the outlet’s previous customers “direct-to-farm service solutions,” he said.
Cargill’s other business in Spruce Grove, a beef burger patty processing plant operated by the company’s Value Added Meats division, is not affected.
