Bayer CropScience has picked up registration in Canada for Movento, a new foliar insecticide, for use in apple, grape and some vegetable crops.
The product, a Group 23 active ingredient called spirotetramat, has a new mode of action from tetramic acid, a class of chemistry that acts as a lipid biosynthesis inhibitor (LBI), the company said in a recent release.
As an LBI, Movento inhibits an insect’s ability to produce lipids, resulting in symptoms of poisoning and death following exposure, the company said.
The product is intended for control of immature and adult female stages of aphids, various species of scale, mealybugs and Phylloxera, Bayer said.

Movento, once applied, moves into leaf vascular tissue and is carried up and down the plant system, protecting both leaf and root tissue, with residual activity to protect new plant growth, the company said.
“The two-way systemicity of Movento will revolutionize aphid control in fruit and vegetable crops,” said Brad Ewankiw, the company’s horticulture portfolio manager, in a release. “It really means that there is no safe place that insects can hide because Movento moves up and down the plant as well as to the top and bottom of leaves.”
The new mode of action will also help growers manage pesticide-resistant insects, Ewankiw said.
