Global Markets: Crude oil hits four-year highs

WINNIPEG, May 17 (CNS Canada) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Weekly jobless claims in the United States rose more than expected over the past week, hitting a seasonally adjusted 222,000. However, the total number of people receiving benefits declined to 1.71 million, which was the lowest level since 1973. The overall U.S. unemployment rate was pegged at 3.9 per cent.

– Foreign investment in Canadian securities hit C$6.1 billion in March, according to a report from Statistics Canada. Meanwhile, Canadians reduced their holdings of Canadian securities by C$1.9 billion.

– Crude oil prices climbed above US$80 per barrel on Thursday, hitting the highest levels since 2014, as record Asian demand drove the market.
