Canadian Financial Close: Loonie steady, crude oil declines

Glacier FarmMedia – The Canadian dollar was virtually unchanged on Friday as markets awaited U.S. and Iran peace talks to start Saturday in Pakistan.

     The loonie closed at US$0.7233 or US$1=C$1.3825, compared to US$0.7235 or C$1=C$1.3821 on Thursday. The United States Dollar Index declined 0.15 of a point at 98.67.

     Crude oil prices eased off due to optimism over a lasting ceasefire between the two countries.

     April West Texas Intermediate dropped US$1.85 per barrel at US$96.02. May Brent crude oil retreated US$1.37/barrel at US$94.55.

     The TSX/S&P Composite Index gained 218.05 points at 33,695.76.

     Gold lost US$40.80 per ounce at US$4,777.20.
