Glacier FarmMedia – The Canadian dollar settled just shy of the 73 United States cent mark on Monday.

The loonie closed at US$0.7298 or US$1=C$1.3702, compared to US$0.7282 or US$1=C$1.3732 on Friday.

The U.S. Dollar Index dropped 0.52 of a point at 97.08, supporting the loonie.

However, crude oil prices softened as an oil field in Kazakhstan returned to operation today. This was despite oil refineries in the United States going offline due to a severe winter storm over the weekend.

West Texas Intermediate declined US$0.26 per barrel at US$60.81. Brent crude oil dipped US$0.16/barrel at US$65.72.

The TSX/S&P Composite Index shed 51.66 points to close at 33,093.32.

Gold surpassed the US$5,000 per ounce mark for the first time ever today, gaining US$34.70 per ounce at US$5,014.40. A new all-time high was set at US$5,107.90.
