Canadian dollar and business outlook

WINNIPEG, February 12 The Canadian dollar weakened against its US counterpart on Friday as US data propped up the greenback.

At 8:40 a.m. CST the Canadian dollar was at US$0.7176 or C$1.3935 which compares with Thursday’s North American close of US$0.7183, or C$1.3921.

US retail sales gained 0.2 per cent in January, according to reports out of the country on Friday.

In Canadian domestic data, Canadian households spent an average of C$59,057 on goods and services in 2014, little changed from C$58,576 in 2013, Statistics Canada said in a report on Friday.

The TSX was stronger in early activity, up 181.1 points at 8:40 a.m. CST to sit at 12,268.47.
