WINNIPEG, August 5 – The Canadian dollar strengthened against
its US counterpart Wednesday morning as Statistics Canada released
a better than expected report on Canada’s international trade.
At 9:00 a.m. CDT the Canadian dollar was at US$0.7610 or C$1.3140
which compares with Tuesday’s North American close of US$0.7587, or
C$1.3180.
Canada’s exports increased 6.3 per cent in June-the biggest gain
since 2006-while imports declined 0.6 per cent. Export volumes rose
4.8 per cent and prices 1.5 per cent. For imports, volumes declined
0.9 per cent while prices were up 0.3 per cent, Statistics Canada
said in a report on Wednesday.
According to StatsCan, Canada’s merchandise trade deficit with
the world narrowed from C$3.4-billion in May to C$476-million in
June.
The TSX was stronger in early activity, up 108.77 points at 9:00
a.m. CDT to sit at 14,599.82.
