Pork producers from across the country will be heading to Banff in early January for the live, in-person 51st edition of the Banff Pork Seminar (BPS).
There is still time to register for the event, which runs Jan. 10-12, 2023 at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel.
Following modified versions of the conference in recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2023 seminar will be fully in-person with a revised element, says BPS co-ordinator Ashley Steeple.

Checking the animals’ condition, and a quick look at the ration, can tell the story of the dry matter intake (DMI) of dairy cows.
While delegates can attend all sessions in person, there will also be an opportunity afterward to view taped plenary and breakout presentations online. Tuning into a recorded session allows delegates to revisit a speaker presentation or catch a talk they may have missed.
“We always bring in top speakers and this is one way delegates can be sure they get every bit of information from these industry-leading presenters,” says Steeple.
Expectations are high for a vibrant social time as well, adds Steeple. “The past few years have dramatically cut into the opportunity to be together as an industry. We are already seeing strong hotel bookings and related events being planned around the Seminar week.”
Relevant industry topics
BPS plenary sessions will include an update and outlook on the global pork market as well as a presentation on pork production trends and opportunities. Breakout sessions over the two days will include topics such as swine health, sow management and reproduction, piglet management, grow-finish management, feed and nutrition, building and engineering designs, as well as a look at sustainable food production and achieving carbon-neutral pork production.
Among the award presentations, is the long-popular FX Aherne Awards which recognize pork producers for their innovative designs in facilities and equipment benefiting all aspects of pork production and animal welfare.
Program and registration details are posted on the seminar website at banffpork.ca. That’s the best place to follow the latest news on all developments as the seminar nears, says Steeple.
Ongoing news postings will be available in the annual Inside BPS Special Report which can be accessed by link from the seminar website. That information from blog postings and news releases is designed to be available for use by media and industry.
Steeple says delegates are encouraged to follow BPS on Twitter. “It is a real bonus to have BPS delegates help tell the story of modern pork production by posting their experiences and knowledge from BPS 2023 with the #BanffPork hashtag.”
The Banff Pork Seminar is co-ordinated by the University of Alberta’s Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Sciences, in co-operation with Alberta Pork, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry and other pork industry representatives from across Canada.
