Former Cargill chief on port board

Published: September 24, 2007

Federal Transport Minister Lawrence Cannon has named Kerry Hawkins, who retired last year as president of the Canadian arm of Cargill, to the board of the Prince Rupert Port Authority.

Hawkins, who had worked for the agri-food and grain-handling company since 1964 and was succeeded last year by Len Penner as president, now also sits on the boards of Nova Chemicals, TransCanada Pipelines, National Leasing and Manitoba Blue Cross.

Hawkins’ appointment is for a three-year term as a “user representative” on the port board. Prince Rupert, the second-biggest deep-sea port on Canada’s West Coast and the deepest natural harbour on this continent, handled almost 7.6 million tonnes of cargo in 2006, including 4.7 million tonnes of wheat, barley, canola and screenings (up from 3.1 million tonnes in 2005) at its grain terminal.
